Doula Services and More
Hello, my name is Amy Ihrig. I have been happily married for over 23 years and we are grateful to have five wonderful children in our family. Our two oldest were hand-selected and personally chosen through adoption and our three younger ones were, as my husband lovingly puts it, " homemade with spare parts we had lying around the house." I mention this because it is with deep gratitude and humility that I approach each pregnancy and child in our family. All of them were breastfed; the last four by me.
For my first pregnancy and delivery, my husband and I studied the Hypnobirthing method of childbirth (www.hypnobirthing.com) and found it to be useful and relaxing. Eventually, due to exhaustion, I gave way to intervention and after 29 hours, our third child was born. I have since learned that it could have been very different. It was a positive experience for us, though, because we felt we were as prepared as we possibly could have been at the time and I was involved in the decision-making processes. I share this information because, although I am an advocate for natural childbirth, I am still personally experienced and can compassionately work with medicated birth as well.
During our second pregnancy and delivery, we put our all into The Bradley Method® of Natural Childbirth and found success and peace. My labor was so surprisingly short that our fourth child was accidentally born at home in only 4 1/2 hours. It is still one of the most joyful memories I have ever had in my life, and the main reason you are reading this now. Besides being a doula, I am also qualified to teach natural childbirth education through The Bradley Method® as well. Please see my dedicated sight: www.bradleybirth.com/amyihrig and let me know if you would be interested in taking this wonderful class.
With our third pregnancy, we attended a HypnoBabies (www.hypnobabies.com) course for added support and accountability. It was a great method for keeping my attitudes and faith about birth in the right direction. Our daughter was born at home, this time on purpose, in less than an hour and a half. Although I have chosen homebirth for my family, I sincerely believe that every woman should give birth wherever she feels the safest and most supported for her.
I began my training as a doula with The Nurturing Place (www.thenurturingplace.com) in Utah. I am certified through Doulas of North America (www.dona.org). While I love teaching, attending births as a doula is such a privilege and it is my favorite part.
I have also learned the art of Infant Massage (www.infantmassageusa.org) and I am certified to teach it to parents. Infant massage is designed to be used from age 0-12 months (and beyond), so if you are interested in better bonding, better sleeping, better digestion, and overall better health for your baby, please let me know.
If you ever have any questions about breastfeeding, I am also a La Leche League Leader (www.llli.org) and would be happy to help increase your confidence in your ability to nurse your baby.
I have a Bachelor's Degree from Brigham Young University (www.byu.edu) in Family Living, and I am currently working on my Master's degree to become a midwife, through The Midwives College of Utah (www.midwifery.edu). Growing up, I thought I wanted to become an obstetrician. I gave up on that goal because my future family was too important to me to spend so much time away. Through the process of becoming a mother, I have learned that I can and want to return to that goal, but with a twist. I have since learned the midwifery-model of care (www.cfmidwifery.org) and as a doula and childbirth educator, I am on a path again to that goal of helping women during such a miraculous time in their lives. I have a passion for life and the gifts we are all given, both physically and spiritually. I want to help others tap into that source of power and potential.
When I'm not busy homeschooling my children, I enjoy quilting, scrapbooking, reading wholesome books, singing, and dating my husband. Oh yeah, and I also collect elephants and dolls!
Please contact me if you'd like more information about any of my classes and/or doula services.
